Find a Weight Watchers group; they'll get you focusing on portion size, and on finding a way to choose foods you like but cut way down on the fattening stuff. you can find a group in your area by using the search engine at www.weightwatchers.com. Start exercising - one good thing to do is join the YMCA if you live in a place with a good Y. Some Y's are better than a lot of health clubs and they're a LOT less expensive than a health club. If you're extremely poor they even will cut your fees. search google using "ymca" and name of your city. Realize the weight won't come off all at once -- Weight Watchers is good for that, because you see in there that people on a diet typically lose weight steadily but not that fast. Realize that every little bit of weight you lose is progress.

I try not to think of it as "I have to lose 30 lbs." because that just seems so daunting. Think of it as "I am going to lose 5 lbs. and then go on to the next 5" and the next, and so on. That way you can feel successful every time you lose a few pounds, instead of getting frustrated. (I had to lose 35 and have lost a little less than 20 over the past six months. Slow but I don't mind because even the first 5 lbs. were a total improvement in the way I looked and felt, and 15 really makes a difference.)

First start by figuring how long you have to lose this weight and if its safe. Then you start eating healthier, like instead of having bread, or pasta have a salad with your meal. Take Care of your body and excercise. Try making a cd or getting one of your favorite cd's go for a walk and when a slow song comes on walk slow and when a fast one comes on walk fast. Its fun and it helps you burn calories.Never do those crash diet pills. Those are really bad for you.

to lose and maintain...the best way is still the old fashioned way:
-6 SMALL meals a day
-try Slimfast or Carnation Instant breakfast and a piece of fruit for breakfast
-use Splenda or Equal in place of sugar
-diet soda in place of regular soda
-limit fried & fatty & greasy foods
-limit snacks like chips, tortillas, cheese puffs, cookies, etc. Try the 100 cal packs of this stuff, by Nabisco I think, if you really like them
-limit refined grains; eat whole grain & whole wheat
-eat lean cuts of fish and poultry. Limit beef & pork
-stay away from fast food like burgers, hot dogs, french fries, tacos. These places use nothing by refined foods and fat in the processing. Instead, make low-fat home versions. They taste better and are better for you.
-limit alcoholic beverages -- these are empy calories
-plenty of water
-excercise for at least 30 minutes, 3X a week
