There is no such thing as a stupid question. However, that does not mean that every question should be asked. Of course, there are questions not to ask. It depends on your audience and just basic courtesy. You generally don't ask people questions that are none of your business or simply offensive (How much did you pay for this house? How much money do you have in your 401K? What do you and your wife do in bed? Is that kid really yours? Is your son still doing crystal meth?)

depending on the situation, yes there are. example, on a first date you should never ask about what kind of freaking things the other person likes to do in bed. at a funeral you should not ask who the person was again. at a wedding you should not ask the groom in front of the bride if he has seen how beautiful his ex looks after she had the plastic surgery done.

I think pointedly asking someone about their income, religious or political beliefs or sexual orientation should be pretty much avoided at all costs in polite conversation (i.e, with business associates, casual acquaintances, at a dinner party, etc.).

The only stupid question is the one that you don't ask.
A gentleman will never ask a lady her age.
Hope this helps.
