Just to confirm - the first thing I tried was to rescan for all channels - it told me it found some new ones but the channels above are those available after the scan (I stopped after a few or I'd run out of space!!)

I hope I don't have to do anything with the aerial as I live in a block of apartments and the aerial I guess is stashed up somewhere that I can't easily reach

Just tried totally resetting everything : now the channels I couldn't get before aren't even on the list and the ones I could get are coming up as Audio only channels. :(

BBC3 and 4 don't start broadcasting until 7pm, so that's why you get the info screen. But it's a bad sign that you don't get many of the others.
If you're in an apartment block I'd gues that you've probably got a communal aerial with a signal splitter: this makes the signal weaker and may well be causing your problem. It may help to get a signal booster of some kind [see link below] (either at your end or at the aerial, which would probably need to be done through your residents' association), upgrade the shared aerial - or get your own aerial.

Your problem is almost certainly aerial related.
Try another aerial outlet in a different room.

There is a catch with Freeview transmission at the moment, they are all on very low power until the analogue stuff is switched off. You may well find that when they radiate at full power you'll have no problem.

For example, my local transmitter is 10Kw ( 10,000 w ) for the analogue channels but only 100 w for the Freeview digital channels. As a result you have to put up quite a decent aerial for Freeview to work here, and I can see the transmitter aerial from here.. it's about 10Km away over water.

If you think your STB is faulty, the easiest test is to take it to a friend who can receive all the channels and swap your box for theirs temporarily.

My parents have the same toruble with ITV1 ans Channel 4. I have tried rescanning the box and also moving it somewhere else.

We live half a mile away from them, and have an ntl digital subscription, and we get everything fine.

Therefore, we have concluded that it is either the local area, or their box does not have a powerful enough signal....

Even though you are in the centre of Manchester that receives free view your Ariel may not be powerful enough to accept the signal. It may be an idea to buy a booster unit or have a larger new Ariel fitted

try moving the tv and box to somewhere else in the house if you can. We can get all channels downstairs in our living room, but when we bought the same box for our bedroom , we could only get half the channels. It might also be worth getting a more powerful aeriel for your tv then it might boost the freeview box.

BBC3 and 4 only come on after 7pm, if you can get the info screen then you probably have reception for those.

you can get a booster for a few pounds mine was a lot better when i did this, altho I do get the screen freezing at times, then I change channels and its ok. this is a personal booster it has nothing to do with with your communial ariel, however it sounds like your communinal arial needs upgrading to digital.

Digiboxes use computer components - with all the frustrations they bring!
I had a similar problem. I did a hard reset and got it to find all the stations again. On the third try, it found them all.
