There isn't much difference at all, or some reason different companies decided to come out with competing formats at the same time. (kind of like the new blu-Ray and DVD-HD formats coming out) There was some compatibility issues early on in the DVD recording era, in that some brands of players would only recognize one or the other. Now that isn't nearly as big of an issue, with most brands of burners and players recognizing both formats. I personally use DVD-R most of the time, because that was what I tried first and had no issues with it, since then I have tried DVD+R with no difference at all. I have been able to make home movies that I could watch in multiple DVD players with both formats with no trouble.

the two recordable DVD formats are DVD-R and DVD+R. They use diverse approachs for directing the laser and formatting. At one time there have been significant variations in the way the two format's recorders operated. enhancing features, erasing, and finalization have been diverse. Now, in spite of the undeniable fact that, i do no longer think of there's a brilliant distinction in operation or overall performance; new DVD gamers will examine the two kinds, and you may get laptop drives which will record the two format. additionally, media availability and fee are relating to a similar.

DVD+R and DVD-R are different formats of recordable DVD. Before you buy DVDs for recording you need to ensure you have the relevant type of disc (you may even take this into consideration when buying the DVD writer in the first place). Most DVD recorders will play both formats but only record to one of them (SONY record on both formats though).

You will have to check which format your computer will write to and read as well. The bit which denotes the format is the + or - sign.

The R stands for recordable which means you can write to it once, RW stands for rewritable which means you can write over it so you can use it over and over again.

No, the difference is not that one can be erased adn written over, that's a DVD-RW. =r and -r are simply different formats. I know Mac's won't accept one, and PC's won't accept the other. I can't remember which, though.
