The price can vary all over the lot, depending on whether the house has central heating and insulation. If it has both, such that the evaporator can be inserted into an existing heating system, you can probably get by for under $10,000. If there is no ductwork and you need to install such, the price goes up noticeably. If the place is not insulated, you will need to install insulation unless you want your cooling bills to resemble the national debt of a small country, and that will cost a lot. These criteria will help you choose a house that you can handle affordably. Hint: when looking at a house, find an accessible wall outlet on an exterior wall, and remove the cover plate. Look beside the box to see if insulation is visible.

Consider insulation as a factor. The more the better for savings. Then call Lowes or Home Depot and find out the formula for calculating area vs ac. This will tell you your btu. We have an old house and use window acs. With the units having the thermostat shut down energy savings you can set it so it will be like whole house. The idea is to get the acs relative size for the room you want to cool. Cost? Each unit is around $125. We use four acs. I hope I shed some light on the subject!
