Why do the white tips of fingernails turn clear?

Sometimes the white tips of my fingernails lose the white color and turn clear/transparent.

I haven't really kept track, but in fact, it may be after I've done some cleaning and they have been wet for a while . . .

i think it might have something to do with the sun as i have just got back from 2 weeks in Turkey and they were brilliantly white out there but know back in the UK they have gone clear again

Does it happen when your nails get oily or wet?
