I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE TEXTURED, PAINTED WALLS. IM NOT SURE WHAT THE BEST WAY TO GO IS. SOME HAVE SUGGESTED A "PUTTY" TO FILL IN THE CRACKS IN THE WOOD. SOME HAVE SAID TO JUST TEAR IT DOWN AND START FROM SCRATCH.

I would remove the paneling. There should be drywall or plaster underneath. (I hope it's drywall).

Properly removing your panelling and refinishing the wall would provide you with the least flawed surface to work on. Given that your goal is a textured wall, it is possible that irregularities from filling the cracks in the wood and spaces between panels won't present themselves as problems, but that will depend also on what product you will be using to create the texture. Because there is the chance that the repairs/filling to the panelling will show through sooner than later, you are best off starting the wall from scratch. If removing the panelling is a major job, you can probably get away with installing 1/4-inch thick gypsum board over it. Good luck.

You would not be satisfied with filling in the groves of the wood paneling. It never looks good when painting over paneling.
I would recommend pulling it off, but sometimes it is glued on, and tears off the paper of the Sheetrock.
I removed paneling from a kitchen, and it left blobs of glue on the wall. I scraped off as much as possible, and then used a non-bleeding primer, then textured the walls, and it came out great.,

Remove the paneling. If you are lucky you may have drywall underheath. If you are staring at studs with no drywall and since you are going to texture the walls anyway, you might as well put up the drywall yourself (and a little help from a friend or two). Buy enough sheets of drywall, drywall screws, drywall tape, mud, razor knife and get to it. If it isn't perfect when you are done the texture will take care of that. Good luck.

My Mom just painted her dark wood panelling white and WOW does it ever brighten up her kitchen and honestly it just doesn't even "feel" like panelling anymore...So if you want a quick fix you can do that but if you truly have your heart set on the textured walls...You're looking at a pretty big job I think!...Call a drywaller for that one!....Good luck!

Tear it down and cross your fingers there's not a mess behind it.

we had paneling, and took it off instead of working over it. I'm not sure why, my husband knows,

Use kilz sealer and then paint it the color of your chioce. Don't worry about the groves, it will look fine.
