I think it's just considered the "cool" thing to do. It's kind of like rebellion--but I don't understand how because everyone has a tattoo--so I know its not to be unique. All together--I think it's just a form of self expression.

It is a form of art. Look at the tatoos. Really look at them. Mostly they are fantastically detailed, and can be added to over time. Piercings I am not so thrilled about - but a tasteful ring through the eyebrow or ear is ok. It is self expression - but for some damned reason, people decided that they all want to self express the same.
You should be proud he chose art over drugs and booze. And in ten years time when they are not cool anymore - he can get them removed at his expense - not yours!

Its a form of personal expression. It general implies being a part of a particular subculture and that one is "hard" or "edgy." Its a faze more then likely. I'm 24, and I went through it. I've had 11 piercings, if I don't count my ears and one tattoo.... Tattoos are more permanent to me. So I didn't go all out on those like I did piercings.

it's a sign of the times...just like long hair was in the 70's....just talk with your son and explain that tattoos are for life....and piercings can hinder him from being accepted by most normal society folks... society tends to shun people with tattoos and piercings....but again they could be done with taste too. Not to be seen at work, just when you are home relaxing on your time..

the piercings are ok - if my kid asked if they could have a piercing I would say yes... because its temporary (you can remove the piercing and allow the hole to grow back in..
the tatoos I wouldnt be too thrilled with but by being open and allowing piercings hopefully that would be enough to satisfy them and they wouldnt push for the other..
once they have moved out its up to them.. its a way to be different to get attention - your son is mearly saying "I WANT ATTENTION"

When I see people with tatoos and piercings, I usually think of unemployment, minimum wage jobs, or spoiled children who don't need to work because the family supports them financially.
Note: if they are where they can't be seen, then they can't be seen and I wouldn't think of these things ....

its a "gen-y" thing. Kinda like in the '80's it was big hair and parachute pants. Be glad that your son waited until he was 21. I got my first tat at 18 and pierced before that.

It's that whole freedom of expression thing..."look at me! I'm an individual! I can cover myself in ink and stick holes in my body and no one can stop me!!" I got my first Tattoo when I was 23, and I stopped there. It's just an individuals way of expressing one's self without saying a word.....
