What kind of (subtle?) hints can be given to let a roommate know that you want them to move out?

Don't beat around the bush, be upfront and let your roommate know this isn't working out. The more subtle you are the longer he/she stays. Most people don't catch hints very well, so the direct approach will be best.

There's no way to be subtle about it. Before you make any moves, consider your legal status: Who's name is on the lease? Do you have a written agreement between you concerning responsibilities? I wouldn't do anything silly like dumping their stuff or changing the locks without first knowing what you can do legally.

Why do you want them to move out? What is the roommate asks you to leave? Then what?

Sit down and make a clear, reasoned list of why you want them to move out. It should be something other than "You're getting on my nerves." Too many overnight guests? Not paying rent on time, or at all? Not keeping mutual living space clean? Using drugs or other illegal activity? State your case and make it clear. Give the roommate thirty days to find another apartment. If they move out before the next rent is due, you should prorate the rent and reimburse the roommate from the point they move out to the date the rent is due next.

Whatever you do, be cordial about it. You don't want to run the risk of having your place trashed because you handled the situation poorly.

Don't be subtle. Most people don't get hints. Be clear. Works the best.
You can be clear without being insulting.
It's not a nice thing to do, but some things need to happen.
Being clear is overall apreciated more then being subtle. In that way most people feel betrayed. Not if you are open and honest.

Depends on why you want them to leave. 1. If they have been bringing in too many frineds, let them know that you are getting complaints form the landlord and that you have no choice, but that they have to leave, now. 2. If it is drug usage, let that person know you will go to the cops, now. 3. if it cause they wont clean the house with you, just chunk their stuff outside and tell them it is cause they are attracting to many bugs, and you are fumigating and they have to leave cause the bugs were coming from their piles and piles of crap that was laying around, :) 4. any other reason not mentioned above, I am sure that you being an adult, you have a good head on your shoulders, you can probably come up with a good solution, but be sensitive, and above all, honest. In some states, if you just INVITE someone to even stay the WEEKEND with you and they move in, did you know that you CANNOT tell them to leave? I am not kidding! YOU will have to move out in that case! It happened to my friend here in texas and she was devastated! FIND OUT WHAT YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS ARE! THEN ACT ON THEM!

tell them they have to leave. it's the most honest way, and if you're nice about it, and give them a list of the things you don't want to happen, then maybe they can change their ways. :]
