I use the celebration of Christmas as a commerative date to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Yes, I know it is not the real date and that the event most likely took place in spring. I am hoping to stimulate thougth on a issue and not cause 1/2 ****** knee jerk reactions. Maybe I struck a bitter nerve.

Yes, to the insulting slobs, I am well aware that Chrsitmas, Easter and other Christian Holy Days were once Pagan. Holloween was once called All Saints Eve or Hallow's Eve.

WOW, there are quite a few stupid answers here and most don't even answer your question. They just babble with not sustenance.

I love the bozo who said you didn't research and mentioned that Christmas is a pagan holiday. No the solstice is a pagan holiday and pagans are not atheist. Pagans have a belief whereas atheist don't. Christmas is a Christian Holiday, that for the most part took the place of the pagan holiday.

The person who called you a idot, "LOL" she only needs to look in the mirror, for her own ignorance shines like a dull beacon.

Because they can celebrate the secular aspects of the holiday without celebrating the religious aspects. A day of "peace on earth, goodwill towards men," no matter the source, no matter how naively sentimental it may be, actually serves a purpose. In some ways, Christmas has transcended its religious beginnings - sometimes to the consternation of Christians, who feel that the holiday has become stripped of its religious significance.

I can't wait to see how many of them will come up with an answer for this.Whats strange is not long ago they tried to ban Christmas from being a National Holiday , church and state separation bull. The Supreme Court ruled that Christmas was celebrated by non-believers so it was allowed to remain a National Holiday. Now,don't that put a crack in the wall ?

I know some that don't celebrate holidays, and others who try to make up other reasons for celebrating them. Truth is, holidays are fun and no matter their beliefs they want to be included as well. Honestly, this world would get pretty dull if we never had Holy Days or celebrations because a god or religion was involved.

So are you saying if I don't go to "Christ's Mass" on Christmas then I don't celebrate it. Phew! I thought I was acting Christian there for a minute!

The hypocrisy is ripe in here. If you acknowledge that all the rest of the stuff people do during the "Christmas" season (Santa, pine tree in the house with presents under it) is not celebrating the birth of Jesus, then why would you care? I get the day off of work just like you do and so you go to Mass and I bake a ham and buy my wife clothes. You don't get a monopoly on the meaning of the day because you say so--especially since it wasn't "yours" to begin with.

Hi,

I think Atheist celebrate christmas cause they only feel it's event or time to exchange gift without know the meaning of chirstmas. but there is not only atheist, there is also ppl from other religion can celebrate christmas. WE are also can follow other religion celebration.
If we are christian, we will know the meaning behind the christmas even it's self.

So, there is nothing wrong other ppl none christian follow christmas celebration.

Cheers !!

I don't care if they celebrate (most do to be with family), but it really got me ticked when I used to work at this one 24 hour/365 day job with no holidays off. Every year, this athiest I worked with would get Christmas off before any of the christians could put in for it just so that they would have to work. That is rude. Celebrating the holiday with family isn't.

When they set up a public holiday especially for atheists they might feel obliged to stop celebrating Christian festivals. More to the point why should any public holiday be linked with anachronistic systems of belief-it's the 21st century.

If Christians didn't believe in the god Saturn, why was the celebration of Saturnalia so wide spread among them that the church just gave up and absconded the holiday?

Holidays are fun. I don't believe in earth religions either, but I celebrate Halloween too. I even celebrated International Talk Like a Pirate day, and I don't believe in pirates.

Like most other people, for the presents and food. Anyway to me I'm just glad that by then the daylight is gradually coming back after the solstice cos i hate dark December, at least after 21st you know its not going to get any worse. Wish i lived in Australia, could have Christmas on the beach, nice hot summer there.
