You can never really tell what someones dirty little secrets are. There is no way to fully know what is going on in someone's mind. You just have to be vigilant in listening to that little voice in your head that tells you when something is not right. And be aware.
That being said we just can't hole ourselves up in our homes because we are afraid to trust. If you go to a church where all they want is money and you don't matter to them unless you give, chances are you need to find a new church. If you are afraid of child molesting priest, etc.....just don't give them a chance to molest your kid, never allow your child to be alone with them.

I believe you just answered your own question by your concernment. If the association or organization or just plain 'pulpiteer' up there is hollering alot about money, money and more money (contributions), they are not concerned for any of the flock but for their own gain, usually materially! But you also brought up another critical issue these days which involves molestation, both physically and emotionally. These individuals are like "wolves in sheep's clothing" when it comes to fulfilling their own desires of sexual fantasies and the luring of these innocent victims to his/her dens! Beware of such activities like invitations to the rectory or dormitories where such ones are residing, weekend retreats (all expenses paid) for certain ones these are trying to violate, and of course, the Internet accessibility to those within the flock! Keep an eye out for any of these tell-tale signs and steer away from that church and/or report such incidences to proper authorities before someone else has to experience such demoralizing acts! Good question, thanks!

Characteristics Associated with Cultic Groups

Concerted efforts at influence and control lie at the core of cultic groups. The group displays excessively zealous and unquestioning commitment to its leader and (whether he is alive or dead) regards his belief system, ideology, and practices as the Truth, as law.
Questioning, doubt, and dissent are discouraged or even punished
Mind-altering practices (such as meditation, chanting, speaking in tongues, denunciation sessions, and debilitating work routines) are used in excess and serve to suppress doubts about the group and its leader
The group is preoccupied with bringing in new members
The group is preoccupied with making money
Members are expected to devote inordinate amounts of time to the group and group-related activities
Members are encouraged or required to live and/or socialize only with other group members. I hope this helps

Actions speak louder than words, but who are we to think that we are any better? We must work on our own relationship with God and let Him take it from there.
Luke 6:43-45
No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.

They will sooner or later expose their own motives in their speech and actions. I have, in my lifetime, known 5 such "ministers". They cannot really hide WHAT they are, not for long. The presence of "whitewash" really betrays they are hiding something.

The more fancy the words and excuses, the less I trust them. Cruelty will show its ugly head sooner or later, either in speech or in action. Any demand to be held "above reproach" is a DEAD GIVEAWAY for fruadulent behaviour.

Pay attention to what they're teaching, saying. If money predominates their time, you can bet they're a bad apple. After all, the Bible has far more important things to say.

And, if they avoid strict and open accountability to others -- watch out. If you've got nothing to hide, you won't mind open disclosure regarding finances, decisions, time, etc..
