Assuming you're already on the internet with a browser window open, which is faster ---

Option 1:
1) Log into Yahoo
2) Access Yahoo Answers
3) Type question
4) Type details
5) Choose category and sub-category
6) Preview
7) check spelling (hopefully)
8) Submit
9) come back periodically to check answers and/or check email periodically if you're being notified by email

Option 2:
1) Go to google, yahoo or wikipedia
2) Type search term and press enter

Seems like a no-brainer decision to me, UNLESS you are asking a question because you are seeking opinions or anecdotes. For pure information, I think option two makes a lot more sense.

Yet another reason why Yahoo needs to stop awarding points (that mean absolutely nothing, by the way) for participating here.

I would never rely on Y!A to be a definitive source for accurate information. If I'm in need of information that is critical, I'll get it from the horse's mouth by locating the info origin (if possible)
Searching on Google is no longer 100% reputable either if you don't know what you're doing. It's gettin to be where it is not uncommon to have to drill rather deep to find relevant content.

Now, using Y!A for funzies, no problem.

I have wondered the same thing myself.

Perhaps the answer lies in the occaisional multiplicity of points of view & suggestions from various directions that someone with not a very good idea to start with may not have, leading to a difficulty sorting through the results they would get from searching on their own?

This is only speculation.

I do my own searching & have never come hear to ask a question (particularly given the uneven quality of responses.)

Oh, you are trying to make people realize that doing their own research is much more efficient than coming here? I tried waging that war, and it's a losing battle. Just answer the questions for the lazy people and get your points.
