Actually originates from prison slang in the UK. A job often given to the lowest inmates was to put cardboard dividers into boxes. Someone given this job was a 'divider' or a 'div'. Now used as an insult to those who display stupidity.

Divvy or dividend is what you get at the co-op in the UK, only a few percent. A divvy, or div, is so called because they are not all there, only a few percent.

It's a norwest England term. Div, or divvy, just means stupid person, idiot, dolt, moron, spaz etc. I don't think it is actually short for a proper word.
