Patron and Herradura are both very highly rated. Patron has more name recognition, though Herradura has gotten better ratings by critics.
Everybody knows Jose Cuervo...or at least the name. It's usually what comes to mind first, but it's also the most mass marketed. It's OK, the Cuervo 1800 is better, but if you want to impress somebody, go for the better ones. Sauza is a big name, but it's for frat parties where they just want to get trashed and say that they used tequila to do it.
Keep in mind that there are 3 styles of tequila. Silver, anejo, and reposado. Silver is the clear, colorless...best for mixing in margaritas etc. It's unaged, freshly made tequila. The anejo and reposado are better suited for sipping. Anejo has been aged in oak barrels for one year, the reposado for four years.
Armed with this knowledge, head out to the liquor store and start talking with the people there and tell them that you want either something to get hubby blotto, or you want somthing that he'll be very impressed with...beyond Cuervo, Sauza, Patron, Cabo Wabo (which also does get very high reviews), and the rest mentioned, if it's a good store, they'll have a bunch of other choices also. If the person's sharp, they can even tell you about them and give recommendations. If liquor is available in grocery stores where you are, don't go there unless you know what you want exactly because they generally only put it on the shelves and move on to the toilet paper aisle...so to speak.

Tequila is made from the agave plant. By law, tequila must contain at 51% agave. Tequila has three different varieties:
- Blanco (or silver), which is unaged tequila;
- Reposado, which has been aged in oak at least two months and less than a year (gold in color);
- Anejo, which has been aged in oak for at least a year (darker, caramel color)
Blanco and Reposado are used in mixed drinks. I have seen both used in margaritas; I think Blanco is a better choice for margaritas because it is the most neutral flavored tequila and is less likely to overwhelm the other flavors in a margarita.
Anejo is a sipping tequila and is most closely compared to cognac. In other words, anejo is most likely to be savored after the end of a meal.
I find that 100% agave tequilas are smoother than tequilas that are less than 100% agave. Cuervo Gold is probably the most well known example of a tequila that is less than 100% agave. Non-agave additives give it a gold color to mimic aged tequila. I personally think the additives make for a worse hangover (disclaimer: I have not seen anything in print that confirms my hypothesis), and I don't think it's very smooth. I will never recommend Cuervo Gold or any other tequila made under the Cuervo label.
The following producers are all well regarded for their 100% agave tequila: Patron, El Tesoro (my favorite), Don Julio, Herradura, Sauza, Gran Centenario, Cabo Wabo (owned by Sammy Hagar of all people!). I am sure there are others I have not noted here. These bottles run in the $30-$50 range.
The variety you choose is based on personal preference.
I hope you and your husband enjoy the weekend!

Depends on what he will be using the tequilla for - if it's shots with the guys or margaritas.
I personally agree with some of the others - Patron Silver is my favorite for margaritas, but where I'm at - who could really afford to spend $45+ on a bottle of Patron? (Occasionally in upstate NY, it was hard for shops to get it from distributors and prices went up)
However, if you aren't interested in spending that much for tequilla or if they don't REALLY enjoy the taste of a good tequilla, then buy Jose Cuervo Gold. This will keep you around the $15-30 range depending on what size bottel you buy. I've also had Jose Cuervo Black - which is also a decent tequilla.
If I want to stick with a silver (clear) tequilla, I'll opt for Jimmy Buffett Margaritaville tequilla. I can get it for less than Jose Cuervo Gold and I enjoy the taste much more. This is what I opt for when I don't want to use Patron. This tequilla may not be in every store. Jose Cuervo also makes a silver/blanco tequilla. I have not tried this.
If I use mix in my margaritas - I will use Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Margarita Mix. Some of the other mixes are a little too sour for me - requires food to be consumed to prevent the sour from upsetting the stomach.
I have friends who enjoy Cuervo 1800 in their margaritas - which can also be a "sipping" tequilla.
Other recommendations: Herradura. My wife likes Sauza Hornitos in her margaritas.
Don't forget to buy the limes!
Good luck - have fun!

It depends. Are they making margaritas? Doing tequila shots? Sipping it?
For margaritas, I prefer the bite of a good 100% agave silver tequila, such as Patron or Herradura.
For sipping, there's no substitute for an Anejo, which is also 100% agave, but also aged to make it smoother. Patron and Herrdura ara also good brands here.
Edit: Forgot about Don Julio, also a good brand.
For shots, get the cheap stuff. Doesn't matter, the experience is meant to be some form of penance. Get ready to worship the porcelain god.

Your best bet is to ask the guy at the counter, There are so many out htere, they will help alot, Cuervo is good but harsh, Patron is smooth especially when chilled...like I said there are so many to choose from and the guy at the store is the expert.
