To combat the depression stay busy. To get out of debt stay busy. I have been working a second part time job for the last 15 years. At first all the money went straight to debt reducion. When the debt was gone the funds were only for large purchases never for just an increase in standard of living (IE: new car on payments), so far 1 classic car and restoration and 1 week in a vacation resort. Prior to the second job I was really down and fearing the bills in the mail. Now things are good.
Hope it helps
BTW being busy at the second job kept my mind on the goal with out time for the down feeling.

*******Well, whatever you do, do NOT use one of those credit counseling services or a debt consolidation service. They are SCAMS and you will end up paying them more money than you owe your creditors.
Talk to a family member with good credit and ask them to sit down with you and work out a budget. Decide what you can afford to pay for food, shelter, utilities, car, etc., and then what you can pay on your debts. It's important that you pay a little on each debt EVERY month. Then they can't do anything to you.

Pay the minimum payments on all your bills, and pay extra on the bill that has the highest interest rate until it's paid off, then put extra on the next highest interest rate...
Don't buy anything unless it is a necessity. You can't pay off your debt if you are continually buying things.
Sell some of your things. Cancel TV, Internet, cell phone, anything you don't need.
Try Oprah's debt diet.

If you are a renter, you should go bankrupt. It's actually easier than you would think.
But if you own your house and you have an expensive car, then you should get a debt consilidator.
Honestly, any poor people out there, just go bankrupt if you are having severe debt problems, you really have nothing to loose but everything to gain. :-)
