I hear the Jeeps have transmission and other mechanical problems. I am looking for a used 4x4 and am exploring options like the Jeep and even a 2005 Outback. I am looking for people's experience with either car. My goal is low miles and 15-18k in price.

Please give me your feedback on both options. Thx

I own a Subaru Outback and have nothing but good to say about Subaru. One thing I always like to point out to anyone shopping around... there is a diference between 4-wheel drive (as the american car companies make it) and All Wheel Drive. All-Wheel drive as Subaru has perfected it uses viscous couplings alowing transmission of power to each wheel smoothly and equally. American 4-Wheel drive in many cases if on slippery surfaces without limited slip diferentials will spin just one front and one back wheel (doesn't sound like 4-wheel drive does it?) All-Wheel drive sends equal power to each wheel spin or not. Each system is good and bad in its own right but the All-Wheel drive system of the Subaru seems much more "stable" in bad weather driving. I just like to give what I feel might be useful info, and hope this is useful. Oh, and by the way, a well maintained Subaru holds it resale value very well. :)

I am biased. I own 3 Jeeps. I would have never bought the 2nd if I wasn't happy with the first. I can tell you that the Jeep has long been the pace setter in 4WD vehicles. That means they set the standards and others follow. People won't copy you if you're worthless, so you might want to think about that. Jeeps have legendary 4WD capabilities, and the powertrains last a long long time. Many Jeeps have selectable 4wd, and that's a fuel saving feature, whereas Subarus are AWD, which means you can't turn it off. So you'll burn more gas.

All vehicles have their pros and cons, they all have problems sooner or later no matter what people say. Choose based on your requirements. Do you need something roomy? Subarus are known for their lack of space. If you have a growing family, or if you need flexibility in the interior, a Jeep Commander might be right for you since it has 3 row seating. Most Jeeps have more room than the Subaru. Another important thing is that it is very easy to find dealer parts and aftermarket parts for a Jeep ... a little more expensive for the Subaru. If you're into pimping your ride, go Jeep. It will be far easier to find parts.

Good luck on whatever you decide.

You'll probably get better mileage with the Cherokee because you can switch it to two wheel drive. The Subaru is always driving the front and rear axles, while on the Jeep you have control. If you plan to do any offroading go with the Jeep. If you want 4 wheel drive for those slippery winter days, definitely go with the Subaru. I've owned a few Jeeps over the years, and while they are a blast to drive, the 4WD systems' ON road capabilities aren't anything compared to the Subaru's.

Both a very reliable if you keep up with the maintenance.

I work renting cars and we have worked with 2004 Jeep Cherokee and I haven't received any complaints. Go to the consumer report in order to find further info regarding this SUV. Good luck!

I have a 97 Cherokee Limited and love it. Yes, I did have to rebuild the tranny at 110,000, but my guess is that you would do the same with the Outback. The big thing for me is safety, i'm a paramedic. I've seen people walk away from wrecks in Cherokee's that would have killed them if they were in any other vehicle. It's unreal how safe the passenger compartment is.

i own a repair shop, and the jeep Cherokee,s are really good SUV,s,and the Forrester is an excellent one also,,i have worked on both of these vehicles before, and they never really give any major trouble at all,its always been normal things like brakes and tune-ups and normal maintenance on them, some do give trouble though, and most of the time its owner neglect on them, any vehicle will tear up,if you don't take care of it,but either one of these will last a long time if taken good care of,there both good choices for a good small SUV,good luck i hope this help,s.

Jeep's are cheesy cars. Subaru's are the best if you want performance, traction, and durability.
