I want to lose weight and tone up. I hate the gym and decided to go swimming instead.

Has anyone else lost weight this way or have any advice on how many times a week I should swim and how long each session should be.

Thanx guys

Swimming is very kind to the joints and muscles, and it can help you loose weight.
As others have said though, you would have to keep it up for at least 45 minutes, 3-5 times a week.

I would recommend to vary your exercise routine so it doesn't become boring, maybe swim twice a week, some kind of aerobic class once or twice and walking or a toning activity such as body pump or just do free weights.
A combination of these should get you good result and keep it interesting in the long run.

If you swim 60 lenghts of a standard pool, you've swum a mile. Swimming is great non-impact excercise and builds muscle tone and stamina.

I'd try to go three times a week and do 20 lengths at each session - you could always do less and build up to 20. Happy swimming!

I do forty Olympic lengths a day (I have done so for six years) and quite honestly I can't say that this results in weight loss. But it does keep me very fit. I have always found walking to be a much better way of losing weight. Together with cutting down on food.

I swim every other day and have lost about 10 pounds. You will need to swim for about an hour to an hour and a half.

Swimming the different strokes will help different body parts.
Free- arms, and front & outer thighs
Breast- arms, inner thighs and calfs, and abs
Back- arms, and front & outer thighs
Fly- arms, abs (upper & lower), and all parts of the thigh

Swimming is a great way to lose weight if followed by right food choices. It's actually the greatest workout you can get, besides running or jogging. (So I've read)

Lemme say it THIS way.
I heard about a man that weighed some 700 lbs, or 600 lbs, who started swimming, and he got his weight down to 300 lbs!!!
Swimming is the ONLY aerobic excercise, DOING LAPS, is the ONLY excercise that burns calories, using EVERY part of your body, EXCEPT by tearing your JOINTS down!!

Same as running.

Swim for stamina then long slow swims.

For fitness short fast swims

for both mix it up.

swim as often as feels good and for as long as feels comfortable. If its too easy swim faster in the same time if you have plenty of time swim longer.

You will work it out.
