Taking a break is just a nice way of saying they want to see other people you are being too smothering.

A guy will want to take a break so that they can sleep around. A girl will want to take a break so that they can figure things out and decide if they want to be in the relationship to begin with.

A girl will say it because she wants time to think things over while a guy most likely is putting it politely that he wants to break up or see other girls then get back with you.

Usually if a girl says it, she means that eventually she'd like to get back together, she just needs some space, or doesn't have the time to devote to a relationship, etc. Guys usually say it because they want to let her down gently.

taking a break is the cowards way of saying "I've found someone hotter than you and I want to poke at her for awhile." if it's the girl, this could be her way of the doing the samething, maybe it won't be a "her" that she wants to poke on, but maybe some guy she wants to have poking her.

Generally it means he is breaking it off but wants to do it in a nicer way that stating he does not want to be with you

It means he's bored with her and wants someone or something else. She should forget him! If you love someone, you never want a BREAK from them!
