It wouldn't. If god really existed and wanted to communicate with us, it would do it itself.

If you are referring to God, in whom we are made in His image and likeness, why not use a messenger? Do you like to be alone? Are you a recluse? Do you think God in all His glory is a hermit? Of course He is going to use a messenger and 1000 angels as a choir, 2000 others to brighten His day and 1000 more to adorn His heavenly home, He can do as He wants, so why come Himself to deliver a message to the likes of you and I? God is a spirit and as that spirit it would scare the living crap out of you if He decided to pay you a visit, when you finally came to your senses what would you report, people would think you crazy. If God created us and the world around us, then He created lightning. If a bolt came your way do you think you would be moved by it? Then what if the Creator Himself came, would you be able to look Him in the eye and live to tell about it? God is almighty and it is a good thing for us that He is also loving and forgiving. I am in a way a messenger from Him through His inspiration in me coming to you to tell you these things. Believe in Him and your life will be so much better, with Him you will be not only stronger but also another messenger of His divine love.

As usual, the answer is in the question...

NEED? By definition, (the Judeo/Christian/Muslim) God needs nothing.

That said, there is every reason for Him to CHOOSE TO USE a messenger. Why do humans use so many different forms of communications? Why is face-to-face communication so much more compelling than print or electronic? The medium shapes the message -- it IS the message, according to Marshal McLuhan.

Seems to me that, hearing God's message from someone with actual experience is the most effective means of communication. Combine that with the written Word and verifiable historical evidence and you get something more convincing, yet still allowing for the faith component.

Then too, there is the problem of holiness. Even the Old Testament prophets, such as Moses, never saw God directly. The purity of His direct presence is so overpowering as to be lethal to any fragile, not-resurrected body. So He has to use media: angels, prophets, preachers/evangelists, teachers, witnesses...

If God just showed up at your door, how would you react? Just a messenger to let you know what's going on and that He's coming is a courtesy. Gives you a chance to clean up the house and maybe lay in a supply of bagels and lox

Delegation is one possible reason for God to have a messenger.

First of all, the messengers are human. Can you imagine how humans will act if God came down to earth byhimself. You'll be crazy. only human can guide human.
If God didn't send any messenger, human will never thought of God, because human's mind is limited.

God needs a messanger to pass on his messages to the lesser mortals.
The other reason is He wants to make sure his instructions are possible to follow in the first place in our living years to come, through the messanger he chooses, because he is also one of us.So if its possible for him to follow HIS path,it wont be too difficult for us either.WE MAY HAV TO TRY A LITTLE HARDER.
