If you mean weight machines, you must do circuit training to keep your heart rate up. Try doing cardio for 45 minites 6 times per week. Keep your heart at 75% of your max.
Max = 220 - your age.
Muscle does not turn to fat. It will get flacid if not worked, but will remain muscle tissue. This is a good reason to not bulk up too much. Stick to cardio for weight loss and weights to for toning.

Actually if you quick working out, the muscle can turn to fat so you lose your definition. Also, you metabolism is used to a certain level of activity and if you stop you gain weight.
I was 135 lbs when I was running and working out. I've stopped for a long time due to having 3 kids close together. I've shot up to 159 lbs over the last couple years.
As long as you continue to workout, regardless if it's on a machine or free weights, you should be OK. As you age, your metabolism will slow down...that's natural. Try to introduce some cardio work to help. Now that I'm active again (the kids are in school), the weight is coming off and the defintion is returning.

Workouts on equipment / machines is very beneficial. You will build muscle but not get big (if you are a woman) and that muscle allows you to burn more calories, which in turn helps you lose more weight.
