Go to a rescue organization that fosters dogs. Dogs need homes, and why not get one that is already trained and has all of the medical forms. Go to http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/hedgesvillehounds.html . Just for you to know mutt live long. The smaller the dog the longer it lives.

Do you live in a bigger house or a studio appartment? do you have an active lifestyle or are you a lounger? are you home all day or work a lot?

For example if you live in a smaller appartment and work all the time you would probably want a small or medium size dog that doesn't require a lot of exercise. If you live in a large house and enjoy running then a larger breed dog might be good for you(husky)

If there is a breed of dog you are interested in take the time to look up information about the breed. I used to work at a humane society and a lot of dogs were brought in because they just were the wrong dog for that person.

I would recommend going into your local humane society and see what they have. Mixed breed dogs are just as good as purebreds, and some shelters get purebred dogs.

Good luck in your search!

First off I would highly recommend doing some research on dogs. Even before going to an animal shelter. You need to consider the amount of time you have to spend with the animal (i.e. how often you are going to leave it alone). Is the animal good with children (if you have them, or eventually would like them). Costs! It is not cheap to have a doggy and take proper care of them.. If you get a dog that needs special grooming (some terriers) you need to consider that. Living arrangements (does it need a yard, or are apts. ok?) So honestly I would go to the AKC website and find some dogs that you might be interested in, and then do further research once you have pin pointed the different breeds. You don't need a pure breed dog either to do research on the animal. If you do research before hand you can go to the local animal shelter and be able to pick a dog that is your speed (ex: lab/shepherd mix). But until you do research you might not know if that mix will be a good mix for you! They need good homes too... Otherwise if you can't bare to have a mixed breed I would try some rescues they often have a lot of pure breeds which need good homes!

Check your local shelter or you can search www.petfinder.com, they have shelter listings from all over the country. There are 27 million unwanted pets turned into shelters every year so I recommend getting a dog from there, you will pay a small adoption fee but usually spay/neuter is included. Also, don't decide on a dog by the breed. Every dog is different you should go by their personality, so don't get a dog unless you have spent a little time with it. Some dogs like kids, some like adults better, some don't like other animals, some don't like human contact, and so on, By visiting with different dogs at shelters you will be able to determine which dog best fits to be with you! If you go by personality you will reduce the chance of returning it to a shelter significantly versus if you had decided by looks or breed.

It would be better if you looked at what kinds of activities you like to do and then look at what you want in a dog and go from there. I could give you a bunch of different ideas and breeds you could try, but I wouldn't want you to get them if you aren't going to give them the mental and physical stimulation they need. There are plenty online quizzes you can take to figure out which breeds you should be looking at. Also mutts at the local animal shelter always make great pets, just try to get one that is younger than 2 so you can still train it fairly easily and it isn't too set in its ways.

go to an adoption shelter. Save a dog. Also they let you play with the dog. You can get a glimpse of the dogs personality to see if it something you have the time for. Don't buy a dog for $500 from some dog farmer.

Well, choosing a dog depends on ur preference actually. A big dog? Small dag? Long haired? short haired? Male? Female?

Getting a dog also involved lots of responsibilities, bring it out for walks, feeding it with the right food, taking him to the vet... etc.etc.

I think that you should get a small dog. Something like a dachshund, or a chihuahua. I have a chihuahua and she is the best dog in the world. I also have plenty of other animals and dogs are the best.

I would go to the shelter and choose one. If there is not one that suits you keep going. Unfortunately they are always getting dogs in. Puppies are cute but adult dogs are much easier to take care of and you can get a better idea of their personality.
