I've had my cat for about 3 weeks. He's 10 years old, from a rescue home and they told us he was an outdoor type cat but so far he doesn't seem that bothered about going out and he only seems to go out when I'm with him and when I go in he follows. How can I encourage him to go out more?

just let him get to know his new surroundings more then he will venture out on his own when he's gained enough confidence untill then just let him follow you about.

I was always told a new cat should be kept indoors for 7 weeks before letting it out other ways it might want to find its way back to its firs home. Or maybe your new cat still feels a bit insecure about its new home, give it time. One thing for sure the less its wandering about outside on its own the less flees it will pick up if there are a lot of cats hedgehogs ect wandering about But keep giving your new friend a lot of attention and you will get attention from him/her.

when my cats were kittens, i put their toys outside everyday during the day so that they had fun connectins with my garden and eventually, bit by bit, I let the toys out for less time, and few months later, the toys were no longer in the garden, but the cats loved to be there. The secret to success is patience. Good luck whatever you decide to do, hope yous succeed and I undersand what's happening because the same thing happened to my cats

Cats, like all creatures great and small, never push their comfort levels too fast. Given the history of the cat, though it's an outdoorsy type, it's lead a sheltered life. It's new to the environment (read, your area). You should go out more often with your cat. sit outside and read, while he/she explores, keeping you within sight. Treat it like a new born child who, until they are comfortable and confident of their environment and themselves, won;t venture out on their own. Give your cat some time. It will go outside, and spend the night out on the town soon enough :)

Cats are very independant thinkers and do things on their own terms. Try to find a way to allow the cat to go out as far and as long as he is comfortable. If its not feasable to leave a door open a crack, try putting him on a porch and he will leave and come back as he gets more sure of himself and his surroundings.
Cats are hunters and have a very curious nature...this will eventually take over his fear.

As I had mine from an early age when they first went out to a new environment they did only go out with me for a short accompanied play then they would follow me back in again.

After fannying around like this for about 3 months they began to get more adventurous and going out of my sight.

Once they had gone out of sight - GO INSIDE!!

They'll play for a bit - realise you've gone and cry.

Let it in - play with him.

Repeat for a bit letting the time left outside longer then one day - dump it out - go to work - when you come home your cat will greet you with a big meow!

I cant get mine in now! I stand at the front door for ages calling them at night and they stroll on it after about 15 minutes!!!

I thinks its probably the new enviroment that it is weary about and having you by his side makes him feel secure.

Why would you want too? There are alot of dangers out there for a cat. Just let him be, hes a cat and they usually do what they want. He'll go out if wants too. If this is a defication issue, if you dont already have one get a litter box.
