Some cats simply like to sing! They love the sound of their voice and are certain that their human servents are likewise enchanted. Try meowing back.
Peace....

It could be that you _do_ pay him too much attention and therefore he expects you to play on request. Incidentally, I presume you've had him checked out by your vet to see if he has any physiological problems...
However, you say that "he doesn't seem to want food because what he's got he doesn't eat", and therein could be the problem.
As you know, cats are incredibly fussy and will almost starve themselves rather than eat food they don't like. So, as an experiment buy a small variety of different foods (dry and 'wet') and see if he takes to any of them - then see if his complaining stops!
My cat once complained like yours but now, after a little bit of experimenting I know exactly what food she prefers and limit the choice to those varieties. She is now a contented and quiet creature.
Good luck, anyway.

No you're not giving him too much attention. Cats could be with someone getting attention 24/7 and still want more! Maybe he is in pain...? Best to call a vet or take him in to get him checked out.

He is either hungry or wants attention. Try giving both. My cat use to meow everytime I walked by him or came near. He was just talking the only way he knew how. You can never give a cat too much attention.

Following the death of one of my two cats, the remaining one kept miaowing continuously. The vet said she was mourning the death of her mate and recommended I buy a plug in device emitting theromones to help calm her. This did work until two months later she too died - of a brain tumour. Sorry, I don't mean to alarm you but perhaps you should take your cat to the vet as a precaution that there isn't anything wrong with it medically. Best of luck.

My cat is very vocal too. Some just are. I think of it as him saying hello and talking to me. We can actually hold a conversation! He answers me I swear!! (I know, I know, some people are wondering how I can type whilst in the straight jacket!) :-)

my spayed female is the same, shes at it just now as i type, it's just their way of attention seeking and wanting some loving from you. (Or it could be the fact i have a ham roll next to me, cats always have an ulterior motive!!)

not sure what he wants, my female does the same all the time, I think she just likes the sound of her own voice. If you find out what yours wants let me know and I'll try it to, cause mine is driving me nuts too.

He wants more fuss and attention. My cat does it too, until I pat him on it's butt tell him to go lie down.
Just be firm and tell the cat to go. He'll go away (disappointed), but OK.
