Could very well be the matress. The typical life span of a matress is about 10 years. At 16, assuming you have had no back injuries to the muscles or spine, then I would be willing to yes, it's the matress.

If you're a good host, you will sleep on the cheap inflatable bed and let her use your bed!!! (after changing the sheets, of course)

They range from appox £30 and waaaay beyond. You can get them in argos, but I got a really good one from price-drp.tv(the tv channel on sky).

i bought one when my in-laws came to visit. I bought a queen size one from walmart for $29 and a houseguest is using it now. So its lasted quite a while. =)
