Most restaurants will welcome families in NYC. New York kids are a sophisticated lot and you can see them eating sushi, tapas, and all sorts of stuff kids in other parts of the country won't touch. Stay away from Times Sq. overpriced tourist traps with their national chains like Fridays, Applebee's, etc., you can get the same bad food in Peoria. Korean bbq's in Korea Town are fun for kids, so are Shabu Shabu spots in Chinatown and elsewhere (Try Happy Shabu Shabu on the corner of Canal St. and Orchard St.), Patsy's or John's Pizza places are NY classics and yummy, Katz's deli on Houston is a hit. Check out citysearch's recommendations and Time Out NY has kids' friendly listings.

Katz's delicatessen is quite an experience. What it lacks in ambiance it surely makes up for in food. Don't miss the corned beef sandwich-big enough for 2- and be sure to have a knish. The kids can make all the noise they want. Not very many healthy food choices, but certainly one NY experience not to be missed.
