Hey punk_shar...,
The principles of good genealogy apply in India too. However, your naming system is different, as you well know. But I would start with a diagram, you can get the free software or purchase a package. Put in yourself, and your information, then get your Mother and Father put in, then their mother and father, until you get back to where you want. Validate each person with records, or at a minimum, family knowledge. Interview all of your living relatives. Then use the birth, death, property, deeds, probate systems in India, to find a paper trail of your ancestors.
Use the internet to talk to people with common interests - you should be able to find people that decend the from the common ancestor. I put some sites, Cindi's list for India is the last - it is a list of lists. There are many more sites out there, you just have to look and keep looking. Be creative with the search keys.
Best of luck.

Are you staying in Rajasthan or in India or are abroad.
In India especially in North India or Rajasthan best way to trace our genology is through two sources:
1. In our villages one paricular community called Bad Jogi (Badke) used to come and now also they come. What they do is record all addtion and deletion to our family. They have quite old records and they keep it intact - so if you have anyone back in India you can take help of them.
2. This one is little sad one and sure whether that is followed in Brahmins of Bharatpur also though in our district - Jhunjhunu nearly all have this tradition. When some one die in family, we take there ash and asthi to Gangaji. For example in our family we take to Gad Mukteswar (Gad Ganga). When we go there then after Asthi Visarajan, we go to some one called our Pande (yes there are different Pande depending on Surnames). There we record who died and also what were addition/ deletion from last visit.
This is also very good source to trace genology.

There are people out there who will help you for a fee. It's much easier to start on your own. You have some information as stated in your question. Take that information to rootsweb.com, type it in and there is your start.
It might help to get a genealogy program before you start looking so you can organize your information. I like Family Tree Maker, which you can purchase at most office supply stores, or online at ancestry.com. Family Tree Maker will walk you through the process step by step, and also has an extensive help area for most any question that comes up.
I also have a group at Yahoo! Groups called genealogyassistants, and you are more than welcome to take a look and see if we can help you with anything.
If you have any specific questions I can help you with, please don't hesitate to ask. My email is hudsonms1963@yahoo.com. I can remember when I started my family tree, and would have welcomed any help I could find.
Good luck! And have fun!
