Bhagavad Gita States that there are actually 2 covering of the Soul. The Subtle and the Gross.
The Gross Covering is the body that we see, made of Gross Matter - earth, water, fire, air, ether.
The subtle covering of the Soul, also called as “Subtle body”, is made of - Mind, Intelligence and False Ego.
And then there is Sprit Soul that we actually are.
The Soul does not depend on the Gross body for its working. The Soul by nature is fully powerful. Rather Gross Body and the Subtle Body depend on the Soul.
The Example is given of a Car and a Driver. Car has its own way of moving, the engine, the weels, the stearing, etc. and the Driver sitting in the car does use the mechanism of the Car for moving the Car.
But that does not mean that the Driver needs another well and steering to move himself, when the car brakes down. Driver has his own legs and brain that are much more advanced than that of the Car.
Similarly, if your Outer body Brain is dead, does not mean that Soul's brain is also dead. The soul has its own intelligence and "brains".
Having known that Soul is independent of the body, one may ask what is the need for the Soul to take up this useless suffering Body?
Yes, with that enquiry, Self Realization Begins..

You are confusing brain with mind they are not the same thing.
Nothing happens to your mind when you die.
I think that you and many of those answering may be confusing mind with brain. Your brain is an amazing organ it controls our muscles, respiration, pulmonary function and a host of other lesser known functions, but it does not think.
Thought is a function of mind that exists independent of anything physical. What appears to be the brain thinking in brain function imaging and other brain measuring attempts is only blood flow being measured to the part of the brain that acts as an interface between the mind and the body. This is the secondary function of the brain after regulating bodily functions. It acts as the interface, or the mind body connection.
Without it there would be no way for the nonphysical mind to exert any control over the physical body.
It is interesting that science has done its best to overlook this fact for so long. The silly idea that thought is some magical function of some mysterious electrochemical reaction is so vague as to be hilarious. There are several ways to disprove this theory beyond any shadow of a doubt.
Being nonphysical in source your mind is in no way effected by the death of the body and loss of the mind body interface, or brain.
Love and blessings.

The spirit is a separate entity from the physical body.
In this life there is connection between body and spirit but they can be separated also.

you can be in spirit too because you consist of both body and soul whether you like it or not. and when you did you don't have a brain cos the brain is a part of your body and sometimes you dont need the brain to think what is right abd wrong but you need the brain to put it nto action.

the soul/spirit is not dependant on the body any more than the driver is dependant on a car.
your soul being elsewhere when your body/brain is dead or incapacitated, is exactly the same as a driver being able to function, or go elsewhere if their car breaks down.
wether you belive it or not, thats how it is.

It depends whether your essential being is dependent on the material body or if, as science tells us you are more in the nature of an electro-magnetic field that exists within but is not inextricably linked to the body.
