Whilst evrything is probably ok and you just should get some good shoes / trainers dont discount 'shin splints' which occur when you have built up your muscle too quickly. I would just pop down your G.P to make sure that you are not doing more harm than good by pushing through the pain.

Normal side effect of walking longer distances than you are used to. People who go back and forth between high heels and flats have the same symptoms.
Check out your shoes. Make sure there is a little height in the heel, and they have a good support in them.
Check with your doctor if magesium tablets will help. They are given to people with muscle spasms, and/or restless legs syndrome.

You need new shoes. Get some sneakers that are specially made for walking and you'll soon notice the difference. Also if you've only just started to walk on a regular basis, you're muscles and joints need to get used to the different movement

Isn't that just telling you all the right bits are working? Or something to do with a lactic acid build up, much as you get when you hold your arm in the air for ages and it really aches?

it could be the shoes, I know that when I walk in ordinary slip on canvas shoes I out stress on my toes to keep a good pace and that makes my legs ache, when I wear proper sports shoes (Adidas has very nice walking shoes), I have a much better experience.
