software. the main software ion your computer is your operating system. This is probably WIndows, Windows XP. Without an operating system, your computer would not run AT ALL.

then you have software packages which come with your hardware, these are called drivers. it contains information about your hardware, and tells windows about it, so it can control the hardware, and integrate it with other hardware and applications.

software is also things like Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Spider Solitaire, Office, word, excel etc.
