From the Thai-language press: Red light areas in Bangkok in olden days - May 31, 2005

This article was written by Mr. Jaroon Wattanasin who picked up some part from two books, Cheewit Jak Ngao Vela and Sanim Dokmai, Cheewit Jing Nai Mum Mued Khong Ying Thai.

Prostitution originated in Mesopotamia, but in Thailand some part of the law in the U-thong era 628 years ago mentioned prostitutes. They lived in a market outside of the palace wall and included Chinese.

At the end of the King Rama IV, Rattanakosin Era, some part of the bill for protection from diseases mentioned “there should be a lamp for the symbol in front of the house [brothel],” but it did not specific the color. It is assumed that green was used because it is associated with officers. That was the first law controlling prostitutes to follow the law. After that people called brothels a “green lamp place “ and called the prostitute a “lady of the green lamp.”

Sumpeng was not only a neighborhood for Chinese at the beginning of the Rattanakosin era, but also a prostitute area which is why we have the abusive word calling a bad woman e Sumpeng. The Chinese called Chinese prostitutes yumsha.

The prostitute areas in the Rama IV Road area--before WWII--were at Tao Lane, Rong Yai Fang, Rong Mae Kleeb, and Rong Mae Tao. Yai Fang was a kind procuress. She donated money to build Wat Kanikaphon and Mae Kleeb built Wat Kunmatuyaram.
Prostitutes were at Yan Sumpeng, Suaniem Lane, Vegkhi Lane, Rong Kome Lane, Poe Lane, Yuan Lane or Annam Lane (for Cambodians and Annams), Sapan Lek, Sapan Than, Mor Lane, Vorrajak, Tanon Dinsor (Dinsor Road), 22 July Circus, Rongmuang Road, Mahanak intersection, Bobae, Sapan Khao, Nang Loeng, Banglampoo. Chinese, foreign, and hi-class Japanese were at hotels in Sipraya and Sruang.

Before 1957, there were lots of brothels built of which the most famous were at Praeng Supprasart, Brahman monastery, Giant Swing, Brothel Khai lane, brothel in front of Huayrong, Sapanthan, Brothel Banglumpoo, Brothel Sapanyao, Nangloeng, Sukhumvit Soi Klang and Soi Ruamrudee. Besides, there were many prostitutes who paddled around in boats at Chaloemlok Bridge, Pratoonam

I believe that things had changed quite a bit, even in 2005. The Thais had always favoured the males since a long time a gfo, the females were mostly to serve their men. Even then, straying was seen as normal and most spouses turned a blind eye to this as long as their other half return to them. It was normal for a man to take on more than one wife to satisfy him.
This was in the past. In the more modern era, mostr women turn to prostitution as an easy mean to earn money to support their family. In fact, most women are the key bread-winners in their family. Doing anything just to ensure that the rest of their family are ok.
The preious PM, Thaksin, during his term, he was cleaning up the country's image as the red-light district of the world. He had succeed somewhat, Present day, the women had taken on jobs other than prostitution to support themselves and family. Many are also wary of AIDS, and if any is not, you better be worried.
It is a shame that many foreigners still feel that Thailand is a sex haven. In fact, the way they had pulled theselves out of their economic crisis without external aid, speak of their self-pride as a Thai.
I believe that they should be respected. Their liberal view of sex had made many foreigners misunderstood them and feel that they are game for anything. Their tolerance of foreigners only deepen this misconception. I do hope that visitors to Thailand can see the Thais for who they are and visit them for their kind hospitality and beautiful country.

i've always thought the thai bar girls were extremely strong in character. they do what they have to do to help their families (i guess this is the initial reason, then some go on for other reasons).

i wonder how many western women would do such things if they had no choice?

thailand is an amazing country as are the people, so it would be good if it could be known as a place to visit for much more than the sex tourism (though that said i remember reading that more prostitution is done for the locals and only a small percentage is made from foreigners).

Yes, there are the bar girls, girls who work in the disco bars of Soi Cowboy, Nana Plaza and Patpong Plaza, and the freelancers who appear along Petchburi Road after 9 pm and the women masseuses in the massage parlors along Petchburi Road and Ratchadapisek Road. And there are the escort services just a call away. Just watch out for the Katoey or Ladyboys, they can be dangerous.

They are uncountable since it's impossible to get an official rate. Apart from the so called bar-hostesses,dancers etc. not to talk about the average sales girl,hair-dresser and so on. Even University-students participate in the "game" in order to gain a lot of money.
