i dont know where to keep my puppy when i am at work. i have had him in the bedroom and the hall way (i live in an apartment) at first i locked him in the hallway because thats where i needed him to do his business, but then he got better with the toilet training and so i now leave my bedroom door open and let him in the hall and bedroom and keep his bed in my bedroom where he sleeps at night.
now though, i am trying to have him sleep in a separate room to me at night, but dont know where to leave him while i am at work, i dont want to lock him in the hall as i think its too small. and i cant give him access to the rest of the apartment because of mess.
would it be ok to have his bed in my room in the day and continue with giving him the hallway and bedroom during the day, then putting his bed in just the hall at night?

Your puppy needs its own space, try getting a dog cage this is not being cruel, it will feel more secure and safe and you will have the piece of mind that he is safe and outta trouble

a dog crate is a great idea i use them for my dog although now she just uses it as a bed during the day but i know that if i need to keep her safe for any reason i can shut the door and shes not going to get into any trouble. introduce the crate slowly by feeding your dog in there once he is confortable with being left in there for a period of time everything will be fine and you can leave the cage in the hallway all the time if theres not room you will have to decide where hes sleeping and leave the cage there. the cage should be big enough for the size of the adult dog that your puppy will become and they should be able to sit down without hitting their head and turn around and lie down properly its better to get a bigger cage than you will need just to be certain. you can put food and water in there for during the day the cage will also help with toilet training as they will not normally go in their bed so be sure to take him out as soon as you get home so that he can releave himself. also invest in some good quality training classes this will help you bond and also help you have a well mannered sociable dog in the long term good luck with your puppy

Im sure the hall isnt to small. The crate size they say to put them is is their hieght plus turning room. so that is much smaller than a hallway. Just give puppy a blanket and let him sleep in the hall if you change the routine day and night he will become confused.

I cant answer where to leave him only you know that, but make sure you pup has lots of toys to keep him occupied when you are gone, also leave a radio on.
If you are able to leave an old jumper on his bed that you have worn and not washed this will comfort him while you are away.
Also, try this at first when you are with him, but fill a plastic bottle with dog biscuits and do lid up extremely tightly. Then punch some holes in bottle so pup can smell biscuits and he will play with that for ages until he gets biscuits out. It will keep him occupied for ages. Make sure he is occupied as a bored dog will cause havock. and it will be no ones faut but the owners.

The most important thing about dog training is discipline. I have a 5 month old Labrador. Left to run about the house while at work, we would return to ruins! My suggestion would be to get a cage. Bear in mind if he/she is in it all day while you are at work, ensure that it is a comfortable size. That way, your pup will sleep wherever you place the cage. The cage can also be used as a punishment. If the mess the floor, do anything naughty, pop them in the cage for about 10 minutes. Working a treat with the puppy I have now and my other dog who is now about a year old is well trained! =)

You should read up about crate training. It sounds cruel but dogs do actually like it once they get used to it, its a natural instinct to live in a small den. It also keeps them safe from getting in to things while they are still curious puppies. Any number of things could hurt your dog in his house, do it for his/her safety.
I wouldn't recommend this for punishment like some posters have said. They forget what they have done seconds after they've done something wrong, so only correct when you catch them in the act or you are just being mean.

Very good question. I have a westie, she sleeps in my bedroom and i live in an apartment, when i have to go out i put her in her cage in my bedroom and say to her(mind the house for mammy and be a good girl) i leave the TV on for her and when i get back i reward her with a treat and let her out straight away to empty herself. It works a treat.

Make a decision about where you're putting his bed - poor wee thing won't know whether he is coming or going if you keep changing it! How would you like it?? Probably be best in your room but if you don't want him sleeping with you then the hall - just make a decision and stick with it.
Have to say don't agree with the cage idea - its either a place to sleep or a place where they go to be punished - not both.
