Your dog obviously has some sort of social conscience... Yor dog knows that it is potentially leathal to lick someones face after licking its' own back passage...

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm the thought of it!

Is that all you have got to worry about?

Thanks for the thumbs down - you need your dog taking off you...

Dog psychology... what a lot a rot..

Why the hell would anyone want to know that?

wht are half the world starving?

Why is there genocide in Darfur?

Why do we have to put up with the 2 party system?

Why do chocolate bars seem to get smaller the older you get?

Why do most me like pornography?

Why are most child abusers men?

Where can I go to get that thing that I have always wanted?

Why do people ask such crappy questions?

Now they are questions... not why doesn't my dog lick people with its' crap encrusted, germ ridden tongue...

Trust me... it aint a dog psychologist you need sweetie!

what a clever dog why on earth would a dog want to lick a human I dont know certainly; I wouldn't between smokers breath, smelling like a ash tray and drink and God only what else. Anyway, not very hygienic considering a dog washes parts that we cant reach also it is possible that it the dog can carry worm eggs in its mouth,do I have to say more?

Just a guess - but it is the nature of your own dog.

My neighbor's westie can't wait to visit and lick everyone's face. It's just the way she is.

I have a Bichon that I consider very affectionate - and like you I worried that he was "never in my face." But that is his nature. When I am sitting at home, he likes to sit next to me. I realize I'm happy he doesn't kiss me in the face.

My Shih-tzu though - all I have to say is "kisses" and there she is. She does what has been described above, she kisses me below my bottom lip -- but she lives by belly - and would always love something to eat... As she has gotten older she has outgrown it -- but every now and then I can't resist saying "kisses" and watch the little puppy in her come out.

BTW - I have found many people in this area with Bichons and they all say the same thing - no face kisses -- EVER. (And some of them have tried all sorts of tricks - to no avail.)

Firstly, I would not recommend any dog licking a person's face because of hygiene and infection. However, in answer to your question, I have had several dogs in my lifetime and only about half of them have been 'lickers'. Generally, animals only lick us for the salt content in our skin so if your animal is getting sufficient salt in it's food, it doesn't need to lick you. Also, licking is an animals method of grooming. It's a myth that animals lick purely as a means of affection.

I'm amending earlier reply because I think I've found the answer to this question in a book called "The Dog Listener" by Jan Fennell. She writes that licking is a form of ritual greeting shown to the Alpha dogs (the top dog) and it's only performed by subordinate members of the pack. Alpha dogs never lick subordinate members of the pack, but subordinate members always lick the Alpha dogs. I suspect that your dog sees itself as the Alpha dog in your (family) pack, and that's why it never licks anyone.

Why on earth would you want to teach her to do that!.. I've got two dogs and have spent ages trying to teach them not to do that. My daughter, Sophie, who is 12, totally undermines me with one of them. The Bichon Frise who is now 4 yrs old, knows darn well licking faces is not allowed. But Soph's positively encourages the little madam... I don't know how many times I've got to tell her about doggies licking their own and other dogs bums! Eating slugs and snails... catching worms.. yuk!!!! On a more serious note... the other dog I have is a Staffy.. 1 yrs old.. and for obvious reasons I simply do not and cannot have her thinking that peoples faces need to be anywhere near her teeth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's not just unhygenic... it's damned unsafe!!!

Maybe he has a better grasp of what is hygienic than you. Why would you want your dog to lick people on the face?

Why on earth would you want to encourage such an unhealthy habit. How could you let any dog lick your face knowing they lick their own bums and go around smelling other dogs poo. I bet you let it sit on your knee knowing it's just had a crap.
Keep it on the floor where it belongs.
You have decidedly peculiar ways, alter them and stay clean.
