“Maybe you don't like your job, maybe you didn't get enough sleep, well nobody likes their job, nobody got enough sleep. Maybe you just had the worst day of your life, but you know, there's no escape, there's no excuse, so just suck up and be nice.” - Ani DiFranco

My favourite quote is one from the philosopher Socrates (470-399 B.C.) who lived in Athens. He said, "One thing only I know, and that is that I know nothing." Although this one is my favourite, here are some other quotes from the famous philosopher.

"The trees in the countryside can teach me nothing."
On why he spent so much time conversing and arguing in market squares.

"Athens is like a sluggish horse, and I am the gadfly trying to sting it into life."
Socrates continually forced people he met and argued with to reveal the weaknesses in their point of view, and had no qualms with making public fools of people. He tried to make critical thinkers out of people, but not everyone was open-minded to his tactics. This very thing that made him a famous philosopher after his death would, in fact, cause his death. Socrates was condemned to drink hemlock poison in 399 B.C. He was accused of introducing new gods and of corrupting young people's minds.

He who knows what good is will do good."
Socrates thought this because he strongly believed in a human conscience, and thought that if one did wrong against their better judgement, it would make them unhappy. He believed that no one would intentionally make themselves unhappy, therefore he believed his quotation to be true.

I love Anais Nin, and two of my favourite quotes from her are:

And the time came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk to blossom.

One cannot collect all the shells on the beach, and they are more beautiful if they are few.

Emancipate yourself from mental slavery. None but yourself can free your mind.

An eagle will not know how high it can flies, until it spreads its wings.

Believe in yourself, even if others don't.

Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do.

I can complain because rosebushes have thorns, or rejoice because the thornbush has a rose … it's all up to me.

In our ongoing creation of who we are, nothing has greater impact on that process than the choice we make between optimism and pessimism. The choices we make for our thinking either motivates us or they do not.

You know more than you think you do. It is possible to do many things if you believe in yourself. But in order to, it is necessary to know who yourself is.

The pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; the optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. We must look for the opportunity in every difficulty, instead of being paralyzed at the thought of the difficulty in every opportunity.

What goes around comes around. Work like you don't need the money. Love like you've never been hurt. Dance like nobody's watching. Sing like nobody's listening. Live like it's heaven on earth.

It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.

Think of life as an elevator: you choose whether to press 'UP' or to press 'DOWN'.

A man is but a product of his thoughts; what he thinks, that he becomes.

5 simple rules to be happy: 1. Free your heart from hatred. 2. Free your mind from worries. 3. Live simply. 4. Give more. 5. Expect less.

For your collections :-)

When I was in the Navy, the Chief of the Boat (I was on submarines) would tell me to be "a rocket a-s-s. All thrust and one direction".

I took that to mean, to be a hard charger. Make things happen the way you want it to happen.

This would lead to one other which is to be proactive and not reactive. Make things happen around you, don't react to things that are happening around you.
