has anyone evere noticed that when you eat before you go to sleep when you wake up you feel really hungry?on the flipside when you DONT eat anything before you sleep you are not hungry when you get up.why is this??

Satiety, or the feeling of fullness and disappearance of appetite after a meal, is a process mediated by the ventromedial nucleus in the hypothalamus. It is therefore the "satiety centre".

Various hormones, first of all cholecystokinin, have been implicated in conveying the feeling of satiety to the brain. Leptin increases on satiety, while ghrelin increases when the stomach is empty.

Therefore, satiety refers to the psychological feeling of "fullness" or satisfaction rather than to the physical feeling of being engorged, i.e. the feeling of physical fullness after eating a very large meal.

Satiety directly influences feelings of appetite that are generated in the limbic system, and hunger that is controlled by neurohormones, especially serotonin in the lateral hypothalamus

Im hungry either way. If i eat dinner and don't eat again before i go to sleep i get really hungry in the mornings. But if i eat just before i go to sleep im hungry when i wake up but can go without food for a little longer than if i hadn't ate.

Here are possibilities for when you eat at night and wake up really hungry:

1.) You ate a high-glycemic food (refined carbs, sugars) the night before, causing an insulin surge followed by a crash that left you starving in the morning. (blood sugar spiked, then dipped rapidly causing low-blood sugar...the body's response to low blood sugar is hunger!)

2.) You ate something heavy- either a large meal, and/or something high in fat and/or protien and the delayed digestion (these types of things take way longer to digest, plus add in the factor that digestion is naturally sluggish at night because you are supposed to be resting.) disturbed your sleep and you did not get as much deep REM sleep as you needed. A lack of sleep causes substantial increase in appetite because the body is seeking more energy to function.

When you don't eat before sleep, your blood sugar remains stable so long as you met your body's calorie and nutrient requirement for the day. Therefore, you experience less hunger in the morning because the blood sugar is more stable. And/or, when you don't eat before bed, you don't disturb your REM sleep and wake up fully rested, therefore you are not as hungry because your body does not need extra energy from lack of REM sleep.

You shouldnt eat before you go to sleep, as it uses up energy to digest and you wont get a full deep sleep.

If Ive missed an evening meal for any reason, I wake up starving in the middle of the night, so your theory means nothing.

This is not a phenomenon I have noticed. It is not usually a good idea to eat much before going to bed at night.

I get that too, its strange. I put it down to when you eat lots of food your stomach expands so in the morning it has stretched and needs even more food to fill it.

I think it has something to do with your blood suger level. Cause when i eat sweetthings at night, in the morning i feel like i wanna be sick cause i am hungery. maybe ???
