At an Italian place, yes! At a Mexican place, I expect chips and salsa. Higher end places should always serve bread with balsamic, olive oil, and butter.
I used to serve rolls and butter at my restaurant, and I was just a little restaurant!

Yes, I expect it because I'm used to this kind of service at the restaurants I frequent. Ex: Cheesecake Factory, Olive Garden, California Pizza Kitchen, etc. But when I found that you had to pay for the bread at Friday's I was surprised. Bread should be free.

Yes, but have control over the size of the portions. To cut cost down, restaurants can bake their own bread. Use a basic bread instruction, bake one with raisons, the other with carrots and pepper, garlic and nuts.......there's also nothing wrong with plain white or brown. Bake it in a round pot, just to make it look like it hasn't been bought at the local Tesco!

Yes, and I also expect that a meal should come with soup or salad, meat entree, potato and a vegetable. Whatever happened to the good old days when these were a given? Now you have to pay extra for everything.

Some places serve it but dont depend on it all the time. Besides why fill yourself with plain when a meal is about to arrive.
