Gas and flatulence comes mainly from the type of food you eat. In the process of digestion, fats and some plants are coverted by enzymes and digestive acids and as this decomposition takes place, gases are released...i.e. beans, asparagus, cabbage family plants and in some people, even starches can cause flatulence. It is normal, but to prevent this problem you need to learn which food items produce these unpleasant effects. There is a fairly effective product "Gas-X", an OTC drug that helps a lot.
When we eat, we do swallow a little air, but this is usually burped....if you drink a soda too quickly, you burp...but the gases that cause the discomfort are farther down the digestive system. The only relief measure that works a little is to put a heating pad over the belly, it will increase blood flow, but the medication is better. An old remedy was peppermint (or peppermint with charcoal)...

its not air that accumulates in the stomach but the foods we eat that produce gas when they are broken down by our stomach acids. foods like beans or broccoli and some dairy create gas and that is what makes people flatulate.

You swallow air when you eat, especially if you eat too fast. Also some foods generate gas of their own during the process of digestion.
