They are equally important as you cannot have a healthy relationship without giving and taking. You must give love and expect love in return.

Since your question is not vague I think this explanation should fit most relationships, however in a family/marriage relationship you should love unconditionally. None of the I will love you if, I will love when, I will love you except. That is simply unfair because no one can live to anyone else's expectations and be constantly measuring up, especially when naturally we tend to raise the bar higher each time.

Yet even in this case give and take has a role.

If you plan on getting married and your potential future spouse only takes and doesn't give (I am not talking on a physical level or sexually) then you really need to consider if you will want to live like that for the rest of your life always giving and rarely receiving. It is a sacrificial love that may or may not be rewarded ultimately in this life.
