First learn what you are--Taiwanese, not Chinese. We actually have that word in English.

Hey there, I'm an Italian-Chinese in the Philippines. I think you should at least buy a book with translation that comes with a CD or Cassette tape, and befriend somebody who can speak the language, (someone good and won't fool you!) also read a lot of books and watch a lot of english programs as well.

Read books and magazines written in English. Watch the news broadcasted in English. It helps you understand spoken English and because it's the news you'll learn "proper" English that you can use in a University setting rather than slang you would get on talk shows or while listening to songs. Good luck!

The best way to learn any language is total immersion. Find an English speaking family in Taiwan and arrange to spend time with them.
