Could be thrush. You'll need a swish and swallow medicine like Nystatin. Thrush is a yeast infection that can occur whenever our immune systems are depressed or when we've been on anti-biotics. Call you health care provider for assessment and treatment.

Depends where the "scummy stuff" is if it is peeling off your cheeks it is just your mouth lining renewing itself which it does at least once a day anyway, brushing just helps it along.

If it is on you teeth however, you need to be using the bristly end of your toothbrush a bit more! the scummy stuff is plaque or if it is hard Calculus (Tartar) basically bacteria, this stuff wriggles when seen under a microscope and is what causes tooth decay gum disease bleeding and bad breath yuck!

You need to brush each tooth carefully in a small circular scrubbing action, concentrating on the area where the gum and tooth meet, floss or use interdental brushes DAILY and brush or scrape the surface of your tongue with your toothbrush or a proper tongue scraper, as this is where most of the bacteria that cause bad breath live .

Mouthwashes are limited in their benefit as the alcohol in them can dry the mouth and make things worse, so if you do use one try to get one without alcohol.

Hope this helps.

the scummy stuff is plaque, make sure you use a good toothbrush, and some mouthwash works a treat!

Its just a build up of bacteria/plaque, use mouthwash and maybe a tongue cleaner, should help!
