I can speak as a visitor only because I have stayed there only three months.
I find the people very friendly, and appreciate the fact that they speak English.
There is pleny of wonderful unspoilt countryside and jungle, although logging in the rain forests is a problem, like everywhere.
I reckon the Parhentian Islands are fantastic for ecology, beach and clean water, great for diving and snorkelling.
I like Kuala Lumpur which has a better feel than most capital cities, although it suffers from some of the same problems.
I think the tourism industry is under-promoted, as Malaysia has everything to offer the tourist.
I love the food, and I love the prices.

I am so glad to read this question. I just got back from a 2 month visit there and I absolutely love the place. First of all everybody speaks good english so theres no language barrier, even if they didn't the locals are very friendly and the whole country is very safe. Other than that the country has everything you could want in a holiday, quite literally something for everyone: The oldest rainforest in the world (Teman Negara), the best beach islands in the world (Perhentians, Tioman etc), mountaineering on Kinabalu, plenty of jungle adventures with orangutans in Sandakan Borneo, ultimate relaxation in the Cameron Highlands - the best cream teas outside England. And if you're more of a city bum you've got KL which is a world class city with everything from french cafes to techno clubs (golden triangle), the Petronas Towers, huge cinemas, the lot. Then theres the mix of cultures, the food is a mix of Chinese, Indian and you can't go wrong with it. Theres a heavy Buddhist presence and you can learn to meditate with real monks or just sit and relax with them in their temples. Oh dear the memories are flooding back..
