I work at a highly reputable restaurant in the bay area. I love the people I work with and the food I make. However being a chef requires alot of committment away from the ones you love being around most. The higher up you get the longer you are away from family and friends. Doesn't that suck? The way they portray chefs on television isn't all what it seems.

I love my job! i am a hairstylist at an upscale salon with hundreds of locations in north america and london. i work holidays and weekends. i am off on wed and thurs. i would not trade it for the world. i love what i do for a living and i have tons of fun at work every single day! you really cannot put a price on loving what you do. it makes it easier to get up in the morning. you are a generally happier person all around because you are living your dream. so many people hate their job that you have to be grateful if you have found a way to do what you love and people actually PAY you to do it!!! what more can you ask for. also: being off on weekdays comes in handy for things like going to the doctor, or any number of things concerning kids (going to talk to a teacher, registering them for classes/activities and so on). On weekdays, a lot of places like grocery stores and the mall are so slow you can get in and out quickly!! Hang in there, Chef Boyardee, because fulfilling your dreams will help you live your best life possible.

Perhaps you should have asked a chef what it's like instead of trusting what you see on tv. That's how the industry is. Long hours and working holidays and weekends is what every chef has to do. The only way to fix it is to find a completely different job. You simply can't work 9-5 in a restaurant.

I think the main thing is when you get out of bed each day can you say I'm looking forward to this. Our world goes 24/7 and that's just the way it is. So if you have a job you love the hours and times you work are secondary. Your family is very important but you will find a way to make it work, the 2 have to blend together.

yes, i would. i have been working in this cyber cafe' for the last one and a half years, and i love my job. i work 13hrs a day, 7 days a week. trust me its tough and demanding especially since i am the only employee and my customers are all fond of having me helping them out. i get so tired at the end of the day, i have no time for my family and friends, no time to enjoy an afternoon nap, no time to shop for my own personal stuff, but i am here! what i do is make the most of it. the best out of it. for example, from time to time my friends and family come over to the cafe' and we do all the chit-chat and catch up on each others lives; most of the weekends, i call my family and talk to them since i had to move away from home because of my job; i also go out though have to leave early coz i need my sleep. at work, i use the internet to keep my busy like what am doing now. when it comes to shopping, i either get someone to do it for me or once in a while i take an afternoon off. everyone understands this and when my body cant work anymore, my boss knows i need a break!

I wonder if this is not a blessing in disguise. Maybe too much time around friends and family would start to stress you out! If you like your job that much, stick with it and make the best out of the down time. I work nights, no wekends and everybody thinks I have the best schedule in the world. I have no friends and no social life, but I am a content person.

You are very lucky to have a job that you love.
But you do have to balance things so as to have a social life and time with your family. Why not pick an apprentice someone you can fully train to be as good as you and in time it'll pay off as you'll be able to take time off.
Also your family and friends should have complimentary meals at the restaurant every now and then so you can join them as well, and your lunch break will turn into quality time with them as well.

My job requires that we work all hours 24 hr day 7 days a week. I try to plan holidays on my days off. I just make those big meals the next day I am off or the day before. Everyone likes to eat no matter what.

Firemen, Police Officers, 911 Operaters, Emts Paramedics, Hospatil Workers, Nurses, Nursing home employees and many other service people work weekends and holidays. You have to chose or balance your choices, weekends are just another day in the week. I love having Mon and Tues as my weekends , less crowds !!

Have you ever thought about opening your own restaurant? The only other thing I can think of is taking a step down its either the money or family and friends.

If it is a job I love, I don't care what days I have to work. Holidays mean more money for me, so I choose to work them. If I hate the job, I would hate having to work weekends.
