During an early performance of the work, King George the Second of England was so inspired that he stood up. When the king stood, everybody stood. This standing on the Hallelujah Chorus became traditional and has endured to this day.

Why do American's stand up during the Star Spangled Banner. To show respect to our country. The Halleluja Chorus is used this way in England.

That's an excellent question that I've never been able to figure out.
I sang in the local chorus seven years in a roll (my daughter sang in it the last three years) before moving to California and even in Dallas and Fort Worth and it always seemed to happen.

Let me know if you figure out why.

Because it's an adrenaline rush for me. I don't know about anyone else but that it what works for me.
