About 1400 years ago, people started saying it in hopes of not getting the plague. Of course plague is not transmitted that way, but it did go away, and people just kept saying it.

People cough all the time, especially in populated areas before sanitation and modern medicine. Sneezing is more infrequent maybe.

Really, it was stupid either way. I mean it started as a superstition and continues as one - it does not have to be logical or reasonable.

When you sneeze they Say your heart stops and demons are leaving you. Also I heard something about that they can enter at that time. I also know that demons can leave in coughing so it must be more tied with the heart stopping.

Any reason to bless someone is a good reason.

God Bless You for whenever you need God's Blessings, ;-)

In English-speaking countries, it is common for at least one person to say "God bless you" (or just "Bless you") after someone sneezes. This tradition originates from the Middle Ages, when it was believed that when one sneezed, the soul left the body and could be snatched by an evil spirit:

You say " Bless You " when someone sneezes because long ago people thought that when you sneezed, a tiny bit of your soul escaped and to make up for the empty space that created, evil could get in, so they said " bless you " to prevent that... Yeah...

some say its because when someone sneezes their heart stops for a second
but the truth is A sneeze is a sudden, forceful, involuntary burst of air through the nose and mouth.Sneezing is caused by irritation to the mucous membranes of the nose or throat. It can be very bothersome, but is generally not a sign of a serious problem.

Because back in the day, when someone sneezed it usually meant they were getting a cold, and if you got a cold you would die, so they would say bless you, so you woulden't die. Coughing dosen't cause immediate death, you cough for billions of reasons. And the fact that they thought your soul was escaping or something.

My understanding is in the mid evil period they believed it was evil spirits coming out of your body because of the violent nature of sneezing. So they would bless the people after they sneezed. I don't know if it is actually true or not.???
