No Islam is not sexist. What you describe is a cultural thing and not part of Islam. Do not judge a whole religion by the paths that some walk.
I have a friend in Iran who told me that women are a very important part of his culture. His mother makes all of the family decisions and they rely on her to bring peace and wisdom to their family. True Muslims also believe that all should refrain from having sex until married.
There is no doubt that Islam in many ways has been perverted by human culture. The Qu'ran does not tell people to fly planes into buildings either...that is a perversion of God's true religion. Yet it is still not enough to invalidate the truth of Islam...all will be judged by their deeds at the end of time and those whose scales are heavy with good will be happy to enter the eternal garden and those whose scales are light will be forever sad.

Your unmarried Muslim friends are not following their religion. No Muslim is allowed to have premarital sex with anyone, whether they be male or female.
It is true however that men can marry People of the Book (Christians and Jews) while Muslim women cannot. This is becuase religion in the family is carried throught the father's line. A Muslim woman would be bringing up non-Muslim children.
By the way, I hope your descriptions doesn't include chimpanzees... Ugh!

Yes, Islam is sexist. It is the most oppressive religion. When I argue with a muslim, I end up in laughter as the muslim guy/gal try to defend mohammed's sex with a 6 yr old girl, muslim guy having 4 wives, and muslim's rights to marry a non-muslim girl but muslim girls are forbidden even to talk to a non-muslim.

if you have muslim friends who are not following Islam, it is no reason for generalizing about the religion.
Muslim lady should marry only muslim man as he can treat her properly as per Islamic laws.
Muslim man can marry any lady because as a result he can make her to learn Islam and to convert eventually.

i mean imagine Islam was the first religion where women had the right to - vote, property, choosing the man she wanted to marry, education, witness. the proof were the wives of prophet himself -- they were first scholars and first women to give witness to no:of hadith and first women to give sermons -- but with time as usual the MALE DOGMA caught up and again everything was helter -skelter.
never women were allowed to give sermons or write gospels. or are there?. and i think that women should try overthrowing men in all feilds -- from politics to science to law and order-- that way we will have less perverts running their mouths around. also i feel it is always a woman IN ALL RELIGIONS, SOCITIES, COUNTRIES AND CULTURES -- are forced to go through due to sheer male dogma. i mean it is mostly a woman who is made to sacrifice -- willingly or unwillingly. i think we women GLOBALLY, as such should stand up against all of these and put a stop to it. i think its time for us women to say -- NO to such acts.

Sexism in the Islamic world is as much the fault of Islam as of the culture that grew up around it.

crucial crucial mistake...... your judging a person that calls themself muslim.... not islam....
would you define christianity by the kkk or on a smaller scale.... the person that frequents clubs each night and then goes home with strangers, but goes to church sunday morning? no, so dont define by islam by your friends that call themselves muslims
imam yusuf estes once said "islam is not a noun. it is a verb. either you submit to God's will and you are Muslim, or you dont and you're not."
so one Muslim men are NOT allowed to sleep with women unless they are married and two even though your friends may think they are muslims just saying so doesnt make him so
a fish may call himself a bird all day long but he still cannot fly

There's no doubt that Islam is sexist.
To address some of the critics of Christianity and Judaism here, there is sexism in the Bible. There is sexism in Christianity. The major difference is how women are treated in Christianity versus Islam.
I challenge anyone to find me a Christian sect where women are beaten into submission, raped into submission, denied an education, or forced to cover herself head to toe (as Islamic women must do).
I don't see Christian men patrolling the streets, clubs and sticks in hand, ready to beat down Christian women who fail to cover themselves.
"Islam" mean submission
"Christianity" is devotion to Christ.
Big difference.
In Christianity, God recognizes that there are important differences between the natures of men and women. His instructions? Men are the head of the family. Women listen to their husbands. Men treasure and value their wives (including their wisdom). That's it.
And anyone who wants to quote Old Testament "stoning" passages, you're talking Old Testament, nation of Israel- no longer applies.
