Technically you can get one when you turn 18. However I suggest you don't. The best way to go about credit cards is to get a joint student bank account with your parents when you go off to college. That way you can get a debit card that deducts money automatically from your account. Then after awhile you can ask to be put on one of your parents major credit cards, be it Visa, Mastercard or Discover. Use it sparingly and pay your bills on time. Eventually when you earn enough money you should open your own bank account. Most checking accounts these days comes with a debit card and the bank that you sign up with will most likely open up a line of credit with you. That way you'll have both a credit and debit card.

The statute of limitations on contracts is usually four years in the US. You should try to find out if the credit card company even has the right to file suit. If the original debt was $500, were interest, penalties and late fees added? If so you might owe a hefty sum. Bad credit ratings usually stay on a credit report for seven years. Making any payments, voluntarily, at this late date will trigger a negative report for the next seven years.

Anybody can get a credit card. The companies don't care as long as they can get their 20%+ interest on the money you borrow.

I heard on the radio about lenders giving them out to college kids without jobs because they know they have a "psychological co-signer" aka Mommy and Daddy.

Without a co-signer or a court document claiming you as a "quasi-adult", you need to be 18 years!

Don't apply for a credit card! It saves your future life! Pay cash.
