The "draft" was mandatory millitary service which was based on a lottery system. Everyone was assigned a "draft card," and if your number came up you served.

Deferrals were granted for a variety of reasons. College students could get a deferral as long as they stayed in school. There were deferrals for medical conditions. I think there may have been deferrals for "only son" situations.

You could also avoid the draft by enlisting in the Reserve or National Guard. You still served, but were less likely to be sent to the 'Nam.

The draft during the Viet Nam era was used to supliment the need for troops in the US Military. Most went to the Army. There was some that were drafted into the Marines, and a hand full (maybe a couple of hundred) drafted into the Navy. Until 1971 or 1972, it was just an arbitrary selection. Then the Selective service went to a lottery system, based on the Julian calendar. To get out of the draft, you could get a student deferment, could hsve s medicsl classification that limitrd your duty or you could have family situation that could exempt you. Some people got out of the drat by submitting medical documentation with out going to an induction physical, like Rush Limbaugh did, if mommy and daddy had political connections. I was in the military the first time in the days of the draft. For the most part, they were good soldiers, but glad to get out when their time was up. Not all went to Viet Nam. In some situations, if a draftee went to Viet Nam immediately after basic and AIT, they did not have to serve the whole time, only 18 months. There was a time, for a six month period, I believe it was 1968 or 1969, that draftees were not sent to Viet Nam (unless they volunteered), because of the shortage of military personel on state side posts. There were some posts in the USA that looked abandoned, and there was a need for military personel to be state side to maintain some military posts.

The draft is when you register when your 18 to vote and such, however besides just voting you register to serve your country if they call you into war. The only way to avoid it was physical handicaps and running away. If you were supposed to get drafted and ran away there were prison sentences. They don't allow certain disabilities such as flat footed people, and I recently broke a buddies ankle in a drunken wrestling match, he now has 2 plates in his ankle and cannot enter any branch of the military,

The draft in vietnam............u probably refer to the time when the USA.......in all incredulous stupidity went to war against a most peaceful n loving people in Vietnam!

The US has not paid for their folly yet! ......while many Vietnamese are still dying & suffering from the legacy of Agent Orange...........the chemical that main, destroys the health n kills.

If any war criminals deserving to be tried........n hanged lioke a dog.......they should include Johnson, Nixon, Hitler Pol Pot...n.......yes...even the gret helmsman Mao Ze Tong.

The first 4 for killing millions thru murder & slaughter. Mao kill not less thru starvation & ill-concieved Great Leap 4ward & the Cultural Revolution!

Go n visit Vietnam today ( I mean today.....not a few years later!) n see with your own eyes the great backwardness caused by the US........but see the subtle changes & economic betterment that's happening........ne please take note of the gentle, friendly and .........absolutely wonderful folks .......... who live simple lives, warmly welcomes foreigners & extend their bright smiles of welcome to all alike!

USA ----- shame on you! The Vietnamese may forgive you.........but history will never forget nor forgive the hell you rained down on Vietnam!

i'm no longer particular coward is the perfect note. even with if i do not accept as true with what they did, it develop right into a call. so some distance because the conflict is going it develop into an attempt to maintain lives and forestall the spread of communism. all and sundry able to administration, authority, and disagreed with the regulations of the north were murdered. i'm no longer particular i'd call that ideological. so some distance as some different person taking their position, i imagine you're suitable. i ask your self what percentage died even as Clinton develop into protesting in England even as telling the draft board he develop into near to bypass.

If you had a rich dad, you could get a deferment from a doctor and get passed over as a result. Deferment is a doctor's statement that the person is unable physically, mentally or emotionally to serve in the military. Or, you could move to Canada.

When you go for the physical and the doc is checking you for a hernia, bend over and kiss him.
No decent man would want to have you around, anyhow.

Enroll in college, say you're a coscientious objector, have a father who's a SENATOR!, have a record of felonies, or split to Canada.
