I only want to make this big purchase once, and want to get what will be the most safe for my children, but also want to consider ease of use since I like to swim every day.

Being from AZ and having one of the highest drowning rates in the country I can not stress to you enough about having a fence with an alarm.
According to the CDC, up to 1/3 of the drownings in AZ last year were attributed to the absence of a pool fence, 14 percent of drownings were blamed on an inadequate or unclosed gate or latch; and 2 percent were blamed on an inadequate fence.

I actually was the purchasing agent for a safety pool cover company. There are pros and cons for everything. First, I will say, fences are useless. There is not a fence I have seen yet that can keep peopel out of and even little kids. I know that they could not keep me out either when I was little.

The alarm systems are great if you are home, but when you are not and someone gets into your pool and drowns even with alarms and fences you are still liable.

A safety pool cover IS the best. I do not sell them anymore and hate that company, but there is nothing better. You can get a manually system or a motorized system to remove and cover your pool. I have covered some of the biggest celebrities pools and they love them.

The biggest problem pools are those oasis pools. You can't cover them.

In most states of Australia it is illegal to have a pool with out a fence. We have very few drownings . Make sure it is fitted by professionals and the locks are high and nothing outside the fence that kids can climb on to reach it. The fence poles must be close enough together that a child cannot slip through and they do not bend at all (i heard a case where they fitted the wrong sort and a child got through and drowned) No expense should be spared when it comes to pool safety

A pool fence with a key lock and an alarm code is the best thing you could do. Get a keyless entry pad put on (Like they have for houses) and don't give your kids the code or leave it where they can find it. Also invest in a good pool alarm. They float in the pool and when something falls in and rocks it the alarm will sound. Depending on how big of a pool you are planning to put in you may need 2-3 of them.

they all have drawbacks
anyone can drown with each of these in place idivually or together. You can climb over a fence. You can get caught under a cover. Katcha kid can fail and not set the alarm.

fencing is best, it might cost a little more but it is cheaper than a life or a lawsuit

definitely the cover. I had a pool at my last house and i also had kids... this is by far the safest... you can buy the automatic pool opener for an extra thousand, maybe less. I did not have the automatic opener and I have opened the cover by my self,,,, could not close it alone but with the help of my child we were able to close it
