Gynecomastia is any abnormal enlargement of breasts. In men, it is very noticeable and can cause a lot of mental distress and embarassment, but also may signal a problem as serious as a brain tumor or even breast cancer. It needs to be medically evaluated.
In a girl under the usual age of puberty, precocious breast development is also sometimes called gynecomastia and also needs medical evaluation.
In newborns, however, gynecomastia is common and even a few drops of milk may be seen, This usually goes away very quickly, is harmless, and is a result of the mother's hormones crossing the placenta and affecting the fetal breast tissue.
Breaking the word down, the "gyneco" means "pertaining to women" and the "mastia" means "breast condition."

It is the unfortunate condition where a man develops enlarged breasts. Kenney Rodgers has suffered from this problem.
According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gynecomastia
"Gynecomastia (American English) or gynaecomastia (British English) is the development of abnormally large breasts on men. The term comes from the Greek gyne meaning "woman" and mastos meaning "breast". The condition can occur physiologically in neonates, in adolescents, and in the elderly. In adolescent boys the condition is often a source of distress, but for the large majority of boys whose pubertal gynecomastia is not due to obesity, the breast development shrinks or disappears within a couple of years. The causes of common gynecomastia remain uncertain, although it has generally been attributed to an imbalance of sex hormones or the tissue responsiveness to them, A root cause is rarely determined for individual cases. Breast prominence can result from hypertrophy of either breast tissue or pectoral adipose tissue, and often a combination of the two. Breast prominence due solely to excessive adipose is often termed pseudogynecomastia."
In Kenny Rodgers case it was assumed that he had a problem plastic surgery that caused it and had to have more plastic surgery--liposuction to remove the extra tissue.
