are you calm when you do math? because you mentioned you are a mathematician, if you are calm whe you do math you are probably going to need to do very simple things to relax during your times that you are not doing math..some things i do are , I watch very intense TV shows Soprano's..Six Feet Under..I knit occasionally...I watch TV..because your mind is running all the time the most intense book..or TV show ,,or a very very funny show like Curb Your Enthusiasm..is what you need to stop your mind..I apparently have a high IQ and the one thing I learned when I was made aware of this was to find the simple most intense things to temporarily shut your mind off..of course morphine or heroin are what shut that part of your mind off that is constantly going..they are both intense drugs.a mild drug won't do it .and that is why you liked the freedom of euphoria you experienced,,you are not able to RELAX like some people..so follow a good intense show with good actors and characters...read heavy books once in a while,,take up a simple hobby once in a while like knitting it is repetitive and this is good too to stop the mind,,as far a humorous shows or movies..i find it very hard to find some that even can get me to laugh..the ending of Little Miss Sunshine did..Curb Your Enthusiasm did..intelligent people need simple intense solutions...I think too much and I also write too much !!!

I get like that too, at night when I try to get to sleep.
The house is quiet, and my thoughts just race around it my head.
Here are some things that have helped me:
1. Read an interesting book.
2. Read a boring book, because if it's really boring, you might get to sleep easier.
3. Use a "white noise" generator. That is a small, inexpensive machine that makes a soft static sound. It is very restful, and blocks out any other noises.
4. Music - soft and slow is the best to affect your mood and calm your mind.
5. Do Sudoku puzzles, or cross words puzzles. These will really keep your mind occupied.
6. Count backwards from 1000.
7. Learn meditation and yoga techniques.
8. If all else fails, make an appointment with a doctor to prescribe medication. Medication does exist that is safer and not as addictive as morphine. Try to go to a specialist for this. They are known as "pychopharmacologists". That means that this type of doctor is a specialist in both pharmacology (the study of prescribed drugs) and psychiatry (the study of the brain).
Don't give up - I think that you can and will feel better if you explore all your options. Good luck!

Wow, that's a tough question! I am sorry it is this way for you. I too, have a very busy mind but I do manage to slow it down with calm surroundings such as ones with soft lighting and then turning on jazz or classical music. Just let the ears and eyes take in the beauty of the moments and everytime your mind gets chatty just tell it (I know this sounds weird--but it works) to shush because you are trying to relax.
The more you engage yourself in these quiet times the more your brain will learn the pleasures of non-thought. It is okay to just feel and not think. People will enjoy being around you more if you can just look at them and/or listen without having a deep thinking look on your face. I can so easily tell when someone has a billion things going through their mind as I talk and it makes me nervous---especially because it's not easy to tell if it's me they are thinking of or someone/something else.
I think it's nice to be such a thinker. I amuse myself with my thinking---I hope that it's at least the same for you and not negative sort of thinking.

Forget about the problem but start on the solution.
Like everyone else you need food, exercise, love, regularity.
You are needed in the world as an active contributor.
Apropos of maths: I am working on Fermat's last Thorem. There may be a solution that uses basic algebra.
I have created a number of small theorems to begin.
It shoudl be possible to do better than Andrew Wiles.

Most of the time almost everyone thinks that they are their mind.
The only way I have conclusively come to understand this is not so is through meditation. I don't think it matters what kind you do & there are many, but all share the focus of the mind on one object & learning control through holding it there. Eventually what was once a babble of noise starts to reside & one starts to....discover things. In the process, peace begins to arise. Even 5 minutes in the morning , every morning can make a difference.

Oh my god girl I got a massage today and was wondering the same thing. It just keeps going even though my body was in lala land. I have the same thing with the analyzing as well which is weird huh? Maybe we are just smarter because our mind is always thinking and wondering. Im gonna stick to that belief. People who think constantly are brilliant. Yep, I like the sound of that.

You sound alot how I used 2b. While I can't address your lack of time to complete tasks; I can say that you'd be amazed at what kind of insight you can gain from taking a break from the stresses of responsibility. I would suggest that you set aside some time and involve someone you trust 2 hold you to it so that you are somewhat powerless; sorta like being in jail. Good luck & peace.

Talk to your doctor about a sleeping aid, or even a anti anxiety medicine, such as Xanax. Works great for most people.
You could also visit a mental health specialist and learn relaxation techniques. There are ways to accomplish your goal.

Kick back on a sofa or comfy chair, play some nice soothing music and relax... do deep slow breathing exercises and basically just be at total peace with yourself...
Try imagining/ visualisation exercises... imagine yourself on a calm and peaceful beach or favourite place....
Take the time to do it and you'll see how relaxing and refreshed you will be after that

someone that you feel okayz with an trust, an some good ways of winding down like medetation yoga,relaxation music,streching is good sometimes we forget to do that do something creative in the thinking time,write draw music something you can benefit from even exercise thats what i do when im thinking to hard breath the fresh air make sure you breathns right)in through nose out through your mouth,,deep breaths too thinking only positive thoughts.
