One instrument, the mirliton, was the predecessor of the modern Kazoo. The mirliton was made of a cows horn and covered with the membranes from spiders' eggs. It was used to disguise one's voice so that evil spirits couldn't recognize the voice. I don't know if it is still used today, but the Kazoo, - which was invented by a Alabama Vest, an African American - is still popular.
